I recently read in The Economist that an amazing number of people are using OpenAI’s ChatGPT as a proxy therapist/counsellor.
This includes young people and other vulnerable groups.
Some of whom have been actively encouraged by the non-sentient, non-medically trained and spiritually-unaware software to do exactly the wrong thing, in many cases with fatal consequences.
Accountability is absolutely crucial and what represents a “regulatory arbitrage” opportunity for an American firm might also represent a real danger to the global user base.
In addition to the conversation about protecting those to whom we owe a duty of stewardship, this experiment on potentially unwitting individuals raises pressing questions about whether or not these tools ultimately improve the world.
What do you think?
Just because you can…
